How an RPG Book is Made

A sampling of books I had near me.

How is an RPG book made? How does a book project progress from idea to finished product? When does layout take place, or editing, or art orders? Does a sensitivity read happen earlier or later? When do we proofread? Scott Gray and I have attempted to provide answers!

Success in RPGs

Creators ask me the above questions often and companies seem to often struggle with the steps, so I know this is an important topic. It is especially important because understanding how a book is made is a key to avoiding pitfalls (such as applying the wrong kind of editing at the wrong time or understanding the time impact of making changes in layout).

Success in RPGs Episode 18 is now out, featuring part one with Scott Gray on How an RPG Book is Made!

Part 2 of How an RPG is Made is also available, discussing proofreading, layout, art and art orders, print preparation, PDFs vs offset vs print-on-demand, and more!

I talked to the smartest person I know on the subject, Scott Fitzgerald Gray. Scott has seen a ton of projects, including shepherding many from start to finish (including Forge of Foes and most of the Lazy DM books for Mike Shea). Scott was the lead editor for Draw Steel and has worked on countless D&D projects, Daggerheart, and many other amazing works.

Scott and I have recorded a two-part video on the subject. Our hope is this helps creators create more capably. We also hope that it helps fans understand the complexities of how their favorite books are made. That RPG book requires a lot of people working very carefully in order to be on time and on budget!

If you enjoy this video, please consider sharing it. My Success in RPG videos are some of the most important I create, but they are seen the least. Your help in spreading the knowledge of our hobby is much appreciated! And, please check out CORE20, the RPG Scott is creating!
